Frequently asked questions

How do I add 10% GST to a price in Australia?

Multiply the net (ex-GST) price by 1.10. For example, a $1,000 net price becomes $1,100 including GST — $100 of which is the GST component. The calculator above does this instantly in either direction.

How do I work out the GST portion of a GST-inclusive price?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11 to get the GST component. Example: $1,100 ÷ 11 = $100 GST. The net (ex-GST) amount is then $1,100 – $100 = $1,000.

Do I need to register for GST as an AU tradie?

You must register for GST if your GST turnover is $75,000 or more per year. If you're under the threshold, registration is optional — but many tradies register voluntarily so they can claim GST credits on business purchases. Check the ATO website for current rules.

What's a tax invoice vs a quote?

A quote is a pre-sale price offer and usually shows GST as a separate line but isn't a tax invoice. A tax invoice is issued on payment or completion and must meet specific ATO formatting requirements — ABN, 'tax invoice' wording, GST amount clearly shown. VoxQuote auto-generates both correctly.

Is this calculator accurate?

Yes — AU GST is a flat 10% on most taxable supplies. The calculator uses exact decimal arithmetic (10% × amount, rounded to cents) so there's no floating-point drift. For edge cases (mixed GST-free + taxable items, rounding rules on tax invoices) check the ATO's GST rulings.
